Surviving Graves Disease

The secret to surviving Graves' Disease and finding the quality of life so many are desperately seeking is to first understand that Graves' Disease is a personal journey. Not every person will experience the exact same symptoms or to the same degree - lifestyle, age and other health problems are a few factors that can influence the degree of symptoms. Second, Graves' Disease can often trigger additional health problems such as low Vitamin D and hypoglycemia.

All too often Graves' Disease sneaks up very quietly.  The hyperthyroid symptoms slowly become worse over time as the thyroid wreaks havoc on the mind, body and soul.  Isolation soon becomes our constant companion.  After the thyroid is treated and the levels are within optimal range, a person then takes the journey of healing.  It often takes a lot of patience to allow the body heal and adjust back normal levels - how long depends on your personal journey with Graves' Disease.

I'm pretty much your average person who struggled with many symptoms before finally being diagnosed with Graves' Disease and Thyroid Eye Disease. After my thyroid surgery, I spent years feeling like I was nothing more than an empty shell of the person I use to be. My doctor just kept telling me that my levels were within range but never explained how and why the body needed time to heal.

My goal is to help bring awareness to Graves' Disease and Thyroid Eye Disease. It has taken me several hard, long and frustrating years to achieve a quality of life that I can manage but it doesn't have to be that way. Life is beautiful on the other side!  I hope this site helps understand the personal journey of Graves Disease.
